The McCord House encompasses the building itself and the programs presented through the McCord Gallery and Cultural Center, devoted to preserving the home as a welcoming home for the arts. The center offers classes in visual arts and music while showcasing the artworks of local and regional artists. The McCord House was built on land obtained in 1834 by a local pioneer, John D. McCord, who created his own home in a very unique fashion, drawing from the Italianate style. The McCord House is in Palos Park, Illinois, which was incorporated in 1914, having primarily started as an artist's community. It is quite fitting that the focal point for local artistry be the McCord House.
