You're Closer Than You Think To A Great Night Out!
ABOUT THE BEVERLY ARTS CENTER
In the mid-1960s, leaders in the Beverly/Morgan Park neighborhood of Chicago had a dream to build a community center where people could come together and experience the arts. They sought out support and funding from area businesses and financial institutions, and the community rallied, raising the funds needed to build a facility on the grounds of Morgan Park Academy, 2153 W. 111th Street.
The building housed a small stage and theater, a gallery, and classrooms – all of them busy serving the families of Beverly and nearby neighborhoods. The Beverly Theatre Guild became the center’s resident acting company, and special music, theater and dance programs were brought to the stage. The School of the Arts began providing aspiring actors, dancers, musicians and artists with quality arts education.
By the 1990s, the busy center had stretched to nearly bursting, and it was time to look ahead to a bigger, better center for arts and arts education. The success of the original Beverly Art Center inspired people to think on much broader terms. The only community arts center for miles around, it was time to invite all of the south and south west side’s neighborhoods and suburbs to become a part of the cultural experience offered on 111th Street.
With funding from the State of Illinois and City of Chicago, as well as generous donations from area residents and businesses, the new Beverly Arts Center became a reality in 2002. The 40,000-square-foot facility was built on the corner of 111th and Western, and offers • 400-seat, state-of-the-art theater complete with orchestra pit • Black box theater for smaller productions and rehearsals • Main and atrium art galleries, as well as additional spaces for exhibits and displays. • Classrooms that are specifically designed for art, music, photography and other arts disciplines. • Dance studio for adult and children’s classes • New ceramics studio
BAC Programs & Events • Art – 2 galleries plus several other exhibit areas for painting, sculpture, photography. The annual Plaza Art Competition showcases talent in a 100-mile radius from downtown, and awards significant cash prizes that help artists continue their work. • Film – The Wednesday night BACinema series shows art, foreign and independent films as well as new releases. The Center is home of the Chicago Irish Film Festival and the screening location for several citywide film events such as the Documentary Film Festival, Latino Film Festival and Polish Film Festival. • Music – classes for adults and children in voice, and group and private lessons on a wide range of instruments. The BAC is one of six neighborhood sites for the Chicago Children’s Choir, a multicultural performance group that encompasses all of Chicago and gives more than 3,200 children a chance to perform. • Dance – classes for adults and children in ballet, tap, jazz, hip-hop, Salsa and ballroom dancing. Exceptional instructors come from Lou Conte Dance Studio, Studio of Hubbard Street Dance Chicago and Hubbard Street 2 at the BAC. • Classes through the BAC School of the Arts – preschool age children through seniors. We have sessions in the spring, summer, fall and winter and offer nearly 100 classes for each session, ranging from comic book art to oil painting, drama, dance, theater, computer and even yoga. Ceramics studio is brand new, with several classes for kids and adults. • Theater – Young Actors Studio classes introduce kids to fully staged performances alongside seasoned Chicago actors. The Beverly Theater Guild is our resident theater company. Their troupe – which has players from all over the south side and suburbs -- christened the original BAC’s stage back in 1969, and they have performed at the Beverly Arts Center ever since.
The Beverly Arts Center is a not-for-profit organization run by dedicated full and part time staff, and supported by the efforts by nearly 200 volunteers. They receive limited funding for programming from the City Arts Program from the City of Chicago Department of Cultural Affairs, the Illinois Arts Council, and The Plaza shopping center. Nearly 1,500 area families are Beverly Arts Center members, enjoying discounts on classes, performances, and gift shop purchases.
Review(s)
From ballet to rock concerts, ceramics to yoga, digital art to theater, this place has something for everyone. I highly recommend stopping in and seeing what this place has to offer.
This is a really cool venue. Yes, another opportunity to hangout with the family. They do a great jazz set on Monday evenings. Nice and quaint.
It's really cool to have this type of thing going on in the neighborhood.
My folks really look forward to coming out on Monday nights. It's also nice that they offer pottery classes and other ways for someone especially young folks to express their creative energy.
Keep up the good work.
